Best finish for olive wood. I dont know about making it shine but I have found that my preffered finish for olive wood is Olive Oil you can apply a LOT the wood just soaks it in a little buffing and beeswaxcarnauaba. I love olive wood so Im interested in the replies. Its a very waxy wood to me for lack of a better description.
Id say anything other than a clear finish would be sacrilege. I like mine with just a coat of wax. Im looking forward to the responses below.
I use CABLO on olivewood but I wouldnt call it a finish that works particularily well. Sometimes it starts great and stays great other times is seems to cloud up over time. One variation on CABLO that I do for olive wood is to put on pure CA I use thin for the first coat or.
Olive accepts finishing oils and waxes well but the woods natural oils may resist water-based finishes. Sealing the wood with a shellac wash-coat will eliminate any compatibility problems. You can use dyes to add color and highlight figure but you may want to just leave the wood alone to become darker and richer naturally over time.
Bottle stoppers i would use BLO and renaissance wax pens i would be inclined to do a few coats of thin CA - because olive wood is very prone to cracking then sand it off so its in the grain and fills the gaps then BLO and whatever non-wax finish took my fancy probably aussie oil. 1 on its being a pleasure to work with and a pleasure to look at BUT if you happen to plan on using a polyurethane finish be sure to start with a couple of coats of DEWAXED shellac. The oil in olivewood sometimes makes it reject poly.
When working with olive wood one may notice a slight aroma reminiscent of freshly pressed olive oil or a wine barrel. This scent is due to very high oil content in the natural wood which means an oil or water based finish may not apply well to your turned olive wood. The wood is very dense heavy and strong.
Now keep in mind its probably best at this stage to stick with straight varnish and avoid oilvarnish blends such as Danish Oil. An oilvarnish blend works best when it can absorb deeply into the grain and the shellac sealer coat prevents this from happening. If your wood is birch maple or ash or any other wood type that has a light shade then this is the ideal finish.
It will leave a crystal clear satin finish leaving the wood surfaces looking polished and clean. As the finish dries super-fast you wont waste any time getting your wooden objects and surfaces ready to rock. Lacquers Most professionals still regard lacquer as the best all-around finish for wood because it dries fast imparts an incredible depth and richness to the wood exhibits moderate to excellent durability depending on the type used and rubs out well.
Shellacs and water-based finishes are the next best options in this regard. Finally finishes like lacquers represent the most toxic finishes you will use. Most finishes no matter what type they are will be usable on wooden dishes if you are applying them as the manufacturer suggests as well as making sure they are completely cured before use.
